It can sound like simple feel-good advice. However, this concept is grounded in neuroscience, showing us exactly how to harness our brain's incredible plasticity for positive, sustainable change.


What Are the 3Ps?

A key component of solution-focused hypnotherapy and drawing from cutting-edge neuroscience research, the 3Ps leverage the brain's ability to form new connections through repetition and reinforcement. With regard to hypnotherapy, you could think of your brain as a garden: hypnosis helps ready the soil, and the 3Ps are the seeds that bloom into lasting growth.


1. Positive Thoughts: Rewiring Your Inner Dialogue

Our thoughts are not insignificant; they're the key to our reality. Neuroscience has shown that negative thought loops activate the amygdala (your brain's fear centre), flooding your system with stress hormones like cortisol. But the empowering truth is that neuroplasticity allows us to reshape this. By intentionally cultivating positive thoughts (for example, affirmations like 'I am capable and calm'), we strengthen the prefrontal cortex, the hub of rational thinking and emotional regulation. This can help make a shift from 'I can't handle this' to 'I've got the tools to navigate it'. MRI scans reveal that meaningful social exchanges light up the brain's reward centres, very much like food or money, fostering a virtuous cycle of well-being. As neuroscientist Dr. Andrew Huberman notes, social positivity doesn't just feel good, it structurally changes brain regions linked to empathy and stress reduction.
